What is all this commotion and laughter about?
Laughter Yoga is a unique concept where you laugh without any jokes, comedy, or humour. I can see your faces now, complete confusion. I bet you are asking yourself, how?
Well, it’s all about a proven scientific concept that the body can’t distinguish between fake laughter or real laughter. Sessions tend to be run in groups of 5+ and combine playful movement, eye contact and a willingness to have a good laugh.
It’s a unique exercise routine where you combine laugh exercises, use yogic breathing and bring out inner childlike playfulness. There tends to be no yoga involved but this depends on the teacher and their intention for the class.
It’s was started in 1995 by Madam Kataria in Mumbi Park in India with just 5 people, now it’s spread across the globe into 100’s of countries and 1000’s of groups. Literally it’s taken the world by storm and making laughter mainstream again.
Laughter Yoga sessions start with gentle warm-up techniques which include stretching, sounding out laughter sounds, clapping and body movement. These elements help break down inhibitions and develop feelings of childlike playfulness.
Breathing exercises are used to prepare the lungs for laughter followed by a series of ‘laughter exercises’ that combine the method of acting and visualization techniques with playfulness. These exercises, when combined with the strong social dynamics of group behaviours, lead to prolong and hearty unconditional laughter.
Laughter has been proven to have a whole host of benefits for your health/wellbeing, work & general everyday life. For more information on benefits see the introductory video about Laughter Yoga other get in touch through the contact page.
